Netflix About To Increase Prices

On October 19th, Netflix will effect an increase in subscription costs to its Standard and Premium plans. The Standard plan, allowing up to 2 simultaneous HD streams, is currently listed at $10 per month, this will increase by a dollar to $11 per month. The Premium plan, which permits up to 4 simultaneous Ultra HD streams will increase by two dollars, increasing from $12 to $14.

The official statement released by the company reads as follows:

"From time to time, Netflix plans and pricing are adjusted as we add more exclusive TV shows and movies, introduce new product features and improve the overall Netflix experience to help members find something great to watch even faster."

If you've stuck with them this long, I think this is a small and fair increase given the growing competition in online streaming environment. The increased revenue would probably go towards better licensing agreements which would be directly beneficial to their own customers. Another possibility would be larger investments into original and essentially exclusive content to maintain advantage over competitors.

In all honesty, most customers probably won't even notice the updated prices unless they're scrutinizing their payments like a hawk. Personally my subscription ended some years ago, (when my registered credit card expired), and I never really felt like renewing. Hopefully their new pricing strategy leads to more enticing content, if it does, it could help attract new customers, or customers who have previously lost interest, such as myself. What do you think about the new prices? Leave a comment below.
