Sony Resurrecting Aibo, The Robot Dog

Have you ever wanted a pet but was deterred by the inherent chores associated with it, such as feeding it, cleaning it or generally taking care of it?. Then your in luck! After a ten year hiatus from the consumer market, Sony is returning its Aibo line of robo dogs.

The Aibo's intention is to replicate a real dog with its 22 axes of motion. The legs let it walk, shake hands, sit, play with a ball, scratch a digital itch, and do "hundreds" of other dog things. The tail wags, the ears move, the mouth opens, and the head turns and tilts. This new version is equipped with touch sensors on its head, chin and back for enhanced interaction; speakerphones and microphones for communicating with its owner; and although the new OLED eyes make it seem more lifelike, it uses a camera mounted on its nose to "see" or record video. Also part of its reinvention for the modern age is the ability to utilize a smartphone app to download updates, view pictures and video from the dog's camera.

The Aibo is currently available for preorder in Japan for a whopping 198,000 yen (approximately $1,700 USD) and is set to release on January 11th 2018. There doesn't seem to be any plans yet to release it outside of Sony's home country, however, considering the fact that they decided to restart its production line may indicate that they could eventually have bigger plans. Would you be interested in an Aibo dog? Is the price point too high of an entry level? Or does the idea of a robot living in your home and connected to the internet concern you?
