The iPhone X Reveal

In 2016, when Apple unveiled the iPhone 7 at their usual annual event, it received a lukewarm, if not negative reception. This was thanks due to the mediocre, incremental update that lacked any appetizing, new, and ground breaking features that iPhone users symbolize with. Furthermore, it controversially removed a core hardware feature standard in many electronic media devices – the headphone jack. Apple fans and journalists were becoming accustomed to this over the years however, this year in particular they knew that it was merely a stopgap solution for something truly special in 2017.

On September 12th 2017, at Apple’s brand new headquarters they announced the iPhone X (pronounced 10). And with it an avalanche of new features.

Features include:
  • Edge to edge display
  • Face ID
  • All glass design to support Wireless Charging
  • Super Retina Display (5.8 inches, 2436 x 1125 resolution, OLED display)
  • Dual 12MP Rear Cameras (with Optical Image Stabalization)
  • 4k Video Recording
  • Stereo speakers
  • A11 Bionic Processor
  • LTE Advanced
  • Bluetooth 5.0

This device’s staggering list of brand new features and updates starts at a price of $999 for the base model with 64GB of storage, and $1149 for an enhanced model with 256GB. But is it worth it?

For the typical iPhone user or Apple fanatic, the answer is unquestionably ‘Yes’. Price point is rarely ever a deciding factor and the higher it goes, they wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice an arm or a leg to acquire the device. To be fair to these users however, Apple’s devices do have an undeniable level of polish on their devices and generally work well within their ecosystem. (Having said that though, let’s just gloss over the fact that Face ID didn’t actually work in their live demonstration.)

For those of us with more rational thought however, the first most glaring topic is the high entry price point, paired with the fact that these features have been available for years on other flagship Android devices. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S8, costs $274.01 cheaper with all of the listed features and more.

Another questionable design choice is Apple’s implementation of their edge to edge display, removing the home button and more importantly Touch ID. The display also now sports an awkward notch at the top for the front-facing cameras.
