
Yesterday, Amazon held a surprise event to announce the 2nd generation of their smart speaker device the Echo. The original Echo was introduced in November 2014, it was an innovative new product that didn't just bring a new virtual assistant to the competition, it was the first to introduce it as a household product. By doing so, it eventually triggered the Smart Home device market and the home automation trend.
The new Echo is smaller and more cost effective, starting at $99, $80 dollars cheaper than the original. It's also more aesthetically pleasing, having six different finishes to choose from, including: fabric, metallic and wooden types. And lastly, it can now stream music across multiple devices simultaneously.
This update feels very minor and incremental at best, however, the aggressive pricing should be enough to keep the competition at bay. By comparison Google Home is $129 and Apple HomePod will be a whopping $349 when it releases in December.
